Last Minute Thrifting for A Night at Studio 54🫧🪩

Waiting until the day of to pull an outfit together for a special occasion is normally not my thing.

After a 48hour work week, I only had 8 hours to pull off what I thought would be the best outfit of the night. A night at Studio 54. The morning of…I did a google and pinterest search to really understand the aura of a Studio 54 kind of party. Hollywood's 70s vibe is the impression I got from the photos.

Some key style features that stuck out to me were:

  • flared pants

  • short dresses with tall boots

  • platform shoes

  • and the ultimate grits and glam: sparkles - whether it was sequins, glitter eyeshadow or whatever…

With about 4 hours left after getting my hair together, I had no time to go to the malls so I had to go straight to my closet and make something out of what I had work…belle bottoms…shine and shimmer…belle bottoms…shine and shimmer. Those words started to replay over and over in my head while I slowly picked through almost every piece I owned to make sure I didn't miss anything. I found two pairs of velvet pants…and was immediately taken back to the last moment I wore both…

Okay, I'm getting somewhere. Platforms…. an H&M pair of sandals that I had only worn once in 2017 and have only worn them twice…

I was stuck after taking an hour to only get as far as pants and shoes.. Yikes, now I had to make time for a store run, but where…who was going to help me deliver this look with such little time left? The Thrift Store…but which one. I had to take into consideration:

  • time

  • distance

  • traffic on the way there and in the store

  • and best of all, credibility with time in mind

If you're not a thrifter, you're probably thinking aren't all thrift stores the same.. But really..they aren't. Some thrift stores are known for having quality pieces, others may be known for having designer vintage.

The goal for this one store was a top and a head scarf. I went through the tops…nothing and time was running out. So I fast paced made my way over to the scarves and kind of took over the section…I was more women lingering in this section than in the tops section to be quite honest I was on a real shopping mission so I looked through each color group and gradually made my way down the aisle…and the other ladies cleared out. I gravitated towards the lighter colored scarves and boom.. I found the perfect two to choose from (based on the color of my pants).

Yeah that's it. Okay okayyyy; were the thoughts that were going through my head as I finished my hair and tied one of the scarves around my head. Yep, this was a look and I had no time to second guess it...which I didn't. I felt good, comfortable and right on brand for Studio 54.

Once we pulled up to the party, on the southwest side of the city, me, my man and his bestfriend had to start the night off right by parking lot pimpin. In Detroit...that's just what we do. Seeing other roll in with their 70's attire started to spark my interest in who really was the best dressed.

We made our way into the party, through the back door and down the narrow steps..it was really giving hood nostalgia from going to or throwing basement parties with my sister and cousins. Ooooo okayyy, yes yes..oop..oh now that's a look. My brain instantly started rambling as we graced the party with our entrance. So much shimmer, so much shine, so many outfits with floral designs. It was definetly a vibe that I was happy to be walking into.

The scenery was a vibe, but a vibe like this only sticks if the music is SPOT ON. It kinda wasn't and the DJs were in their own techno vibes...I wanted to hear some Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson (of course) and so on and so on. But nothing of that nature came to life through the speakers.. So we grabbed our drinks and took our lil party back to the parking lot where we could just barely hear the music echoing up the steps.

The parking lot was kind of where the party was. Our peers were all conversing, smoking and drinking like our outfits were the norm...which they were for this occasion. The conversations were growing louder and the drinks were getting stronger. That definetly meant photo time for me.

So my man and I strolled on over to a part of the lot where no one was standing. His bestfriend started taking our picture but basically said we weren't giving what we needed to. So he hit the flash, put the camera in Live mode and started snappin. In this moment, we definitely became best dressed and probably the most lit.

We continued the night for as long as we could until it was time to head home. The best part of the night was that I was able to look good and feel even better.
