Book 1
I started the summer off reading The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne, because it was something that i watched on YouTube before. I felt like reading it would be better so I can go back and read over certain points I connected with or wanted to develop as a new habit. This book mainly discusses how thoughts are things and your spirit and energy determines what you will attract in life. The topics in this book are very similar to another book i read called Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill. Both books go in depth about letting your mind and spirit control what you attract in life.
I decided to read this book because now that i’m stepping into a new chapter of my life, I want to have something to read that will keep me encouraged on changing my mindset and outlook on life. This book can either be read all the way through or in pieces. I like reading it in pieces because it’s like getting the nourishment I need at the right times. The different chapters are titled, How to Use the Secret, The Secret to Life, The Secret to Money and so on. By time I got to the chapter about how to use the secret, i took a break from reading so that i could develop new habits and change my mindset to think like what I had just read.
The Secret is a book for anyone that wants to change their life and for those who know that an "average" lifestyle isn't meant for them. A follow up book I'm going to read next, by Rhonda Byrne, is The Power.
Book 2
Halfway through the summer I wandered upon a bookshop with such a historic feel; the kind where the books smell old but in a homey way.
While I was there I noticed two books; one that I heard great things about (The One That Got Away by Lena Dunham) and another that caught my eye (The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas). Once I read the summary to THUG it immediately caught my attention. "Sixteen-year old Starr lives in two worlds: the neighborhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs."
And in that moment I became hooked. I felt like this Angie lady had been stalking my life, decided to write a book on it, but then add a twist (which is how some books are written anyways, hopefully without the stalking). Considering I hadn't read a good novel in a while, I thought this was the perfect read for me to get back into reading more outside of school, business or lifestyle books.
Within just a few weeks I had already made it to chapter 11 because of how well Angie painted a vivid visual through her literature. Shortly upon finishing the book I found out that a movie was being created to hit the theaters in October. Now this made me skeptical because we all know that some movies just mess up the whole story and should've just stayed a book. However, they have great actors and actresses like Issa Rae, Russell Hornsby, Regina Hall and even KJ Apa starring as some of the main characters. But when the movie is actually out in theaters, it'll be up to us book worm, movie critics to decide.
Book 3
After graduating, one of my sisters reached out to me and asked what kind of books I enjoyed reading. I replied that I had a genre I was comfortable with, but wanted to get into reading other kinds of books that would still hold my interest. Being the lovely person she is, who also studied journalism, she gave me a tote full of books about writing. The first book that caught my eye was Magazine Writing That Sells by Don McKinney.
After creating and publishing my first magazine, this was definitely a book I needed to be reading. This book really goes in depth on creating the best articles that are worth being sought and bought by some of the greatest magazines. Whenever I read these kinds of books (I know don't judge) I have to take notes, almost like I'm reading for a quiz. My reason for taking notes is so I can really comprehend and learn from what I read. Besides, why wouldn't I want to perfect my magazine writing skill? Delivery is key and reading books explaining your skills will always be beneficial.
